Risk Factors that Warrant Peripheral Arterial Disease Testing

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is the buildup of cholesterol resulting in plaque in the arteries of the lower extremities, causing decreased blood flow to the legs and feet.

You may be at risk for PAD if you are:

  • Over the age of 70
  • 5o years or older with a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or smoking
  • Have a family history of vascular disease, heart attack, or stroke

The signs and symptoms of PAD include:

  • Pain in the legs brought on by walking and relieved at rest
  • Pain in the legs at rest
  • A poorly healing wound on the lower leg or foot
  • Discoloration of feet or toes
  • Cold feet
  • Numbness in legs/feet
  • Weakness or fatigue in the lower extremities

Testing for Peripheral Arterial Disease

Since our podiatrists at Cincinnati Foot & Ankle Care examine and treat only foot and ankle conditions, we have vast experience identifying your risk factors for peripheral arterial disease and diagnosing the condition.

Our goal is to detect PAD in its earliest stages. Once you have been identified at risk for PAD, we can schedule a simple and painless PADNet™ screening test in our own office.

A PADNet test is a noninvasive diagnostic test that can provide early detection of PAD. The test detects blockages in the arteries and the quality of blood flow using pulse volume recordings and segmental blood pressure.

We will send your test results to an interventional cardiologist for interpretation. The cardiologist will recommend further tests and/or treatment if necessary. Our podiatrists have partnered with several specialists including cardiologists and vascular surgeons in the medical community who can treat your PAD.

Our technicians are well-trained to administer your test. Talk to us today so that we can answer your questions and schedule your exam if appropriate.
